During the month of Ramadan, our cravings seem to skyrocket due to long hours of fasting. Many people indulge too often, which clearly results in poor health. While some choices are made intentionally, others aren’t thought about, such as what you should drink once you break your fast.
Many people in Pakistan usually have sharbat on their iftar tables, which is nothing but sugar and flavoring. Others prefer juice or fizzy drinks depending on their meals, again full of sugar. However, to say the least, these are poor choices because, at this point, your body is severely dehydrated and low on glucose.
Consuming smoothies is a far better option in Ramadan. Here is why:
1- Great Source of Antioxidants
Adding foods that contain antioxidants to your smoothie will help you prevent a lot of diseases. Foods such as grapes, berries, and sweet potatoes are natural sources of antioxidants. You can also add matcha green tea powder to make your smoothies rich in antioxidants.
2 – Makes you Feel Full
Consuming smoothies during Ramadan means you will not have time to munch on other unhealthy items such as fried food. It is best to have a glass of smoothie made of excellent ingredients such as fruits, seeds, nut butter, etc., that will help you stay full for a long time.
3 – Full of Nutrients
This one comes down to the ingredients you choose. During Ramadan, adding dates to your smoothies can help you load on extra nutrients. A tablespoon of chia seeds is great to add omega-3 to your diet. Some nut butter to go with it can become a great source of healthy fats. It is your playground; you choose what you put in your smoothies.
4 – Controls Cravings
A glass of smoothie is a whole meal. An average glass of smoothie can be anywhere from 350 – 500 kcal depending on the ingredients you choose to add. All in all, it is filling and helps you control cravings by providing all the nutrients necessary for your growth. A lot of people also prefer adding a scope of protein to up their protein intake.
5 – Aid in Digestion
Ramadan is a time of the year where your eating patterns change drastically, and so does your digestion. It is best to consume smoothies with green leafy vegetables that add essential vitamins and minerals that aid in digestion. This is because the amount of fiber we end up consuming in a smoothie is high, unlike juices that only contain fruit sugar.
