Veteran Comedian Umer Sharif Passes Away in Germany

According to several local media publications, Veteran comedian Umer Sharif passed away in Germany at 66. He is considered one of the greatest comedians in the sub-continent.

The Sindh government issued Rs 40 million for Umer Sharif’s treatment who was fighting for his life. The artist was travelling to the United States for treatment but was admitted to a German hospital on his way as he wasn’t fit to travel further in his current state.

He was due to travel last week but could not do so as he wasn’t stable enough to travel. Both federal and provincial governments assisted in moving the ailing artist to the United States.

Umer Sharif was a Pakistani actor, comedian, director, producer and television personality.

He began his career in the world of theatre at the age of 14 in 1974. His plays Bakra Qistoon Pe and Buddha Ghar Pe Ha in 1989 were quite popular. Much of his popularity at the time came from recording his plays on audio cassettes and videotapes. His exponential talent further elevated his popularity so much that he garnered an audience in the neighbouring country.

In Lahore, he moved towards films. As an actor and a director, he succeeded in movies such as Mr 420, for example. Upon the arrival of the satellite TV and the development of the electronic medium, Umer moved to Karachi and was seen on several talk shows he hosted and continued with his plays.

He worked in showbiz for nearly 50 years and has performed in dozens of plays, stage theatres and live shows.

Pakistani actor Humayun Saeed wrote in a tweet, “Deeply saddened to learn about Umer Sharif sb. He was, without any doubt, the ultimate comedy king. May Allah bless his soul. We will miss you, Umer bhai!” 

Yumna Zaidi said in a tweet, “What a heart-wrenching news  King of comedy who made us smile has left us crying.”

Fakhr-e-Alam tweeted, saying, “Thank you for the laughs….you will live forever. Rest In Peace Legend.”

Pakistani actress Saba Qamar also took it to the micro-blogging site to pass her condolences. The star tweeted, “Saddened to learn about the passing of Umer Shareef Saab. Indeed we belong to Allah, and to Him, we return. My deepest condolences to His family and Fans.”

Pakistani actor Osman Khalid Butt also tweeted to pass his condolences. He said, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. The legendary Umer Sharif is no more. Here’s to the King of Comedy. May you get the highest place in Jannah.”

Popstar Ali Zafar said in a tweet that he is at a “complete loss of words on passing away of the legendary Umar Sharif Sahab. May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannah and give his family peace. Ameen.”

In a tweet, Pakistani actress Faysal Quraishi said, “Heartbroken to receive the devastating news of our very own king of comedy #UmerSharif. He was a true gem in our industry and nothing short of a legend amongst us. May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannah. Praying for his family during this difficult time.”

Sindh Government Issues Rs 40 Million for Umer Sharif, Reema’s Husband to Perform Surgery in the US

According to Samaa, the Sindh government has issued Rs 40 million for actor and comedian Umer Sharif’s treatment, currently fighting for his life. The government also arranged an air ambulance for Sharif to fly out to the United States for a high-risk procedure.

Earlier on, Umer had appealed to the government in a video message for help. The doctors had advised the ailing comedian to go to the US for better treatment. Upon his appeal, Murtaza Wahab, Karachi Administrator, visited Umer Sharif at Aga Khan University Hospital and guaranteed him that the government would assist him in his recovery and make the best possible arrangements for him.

Sharif underwent cardiac surgery last year. Since then, his health has been deteriorating. As per his wife, his condition was critical a few days ago. Zareen Umer posted on Twitter, “24 hours are critical for Umer. Please pray as much as you can!”

In the United States, Pakistani veteran actor Reema Khan’s husband, Dr Syed Tariq, will be performing the high-risk procedure. She confirmed the news on Instagram. She wrote, “Umer Sharif – one of the greatest comedians of the sub-continent and a real legend of all times. He always was working hard to make other people laugh and smile. Today it disturbs me to know that he is in pain and distress because of his grave illness.”

She further added, “I am proud of my husband – Dr Syed Tariq Shahab who has agreed to perform the high-risk procedure and is helping the family in his transfer arrangements to America. I have requested him to do all he can to help Umer Sharif Sahib recover from this illness. Thank you, Tariq. I pray to Allah PAK to give Shifa in your hand and to give Umer Sahib full and complete recovery. Aameen”  The entire nation is praying for the speedy recovery of Umer Sharif and hopes he returns to the country with great health.

Umer’s wife, Zareen, has asked the public to refrain from sharing private photos from the hospital in a Facebook post. She added, “Our beloved Umer has been performing well as per doctors and he is fit to fly through air ambulance.”  She thanked the government for sending help promptly in time to save Sharif’s life.
