Sabeen Hamood Creates History for LUMS by Winning ‘Best Delegate’ at HNMUN

Pakistani students hailing from LUMS have etched their names in history by clinching consecutive victories at the prestigious Harvard National Model United Nations (MUN), marking a groundbreaking achievement as the inaugural Asian team to do so.

The Harvard National MUN stands as one of the globe’s oldest and most esteemed model UN conferences, attracting 1500-1800 delegates worldwide to deliberate on paramount international affairs.

Regarded as the pinnacle of competitive debate, it draws participation from elite institutions like Princeton, Stanford, and Yale.

A modest contingent of seven LUMS scholars represented Pakistan on this global platform, seizing the coveted Best Small Delegation accolade, thus retaining their esteemed title for two consecutive years.

Adding to their triumph, Sabeen Hamood secured the esteemed ‘Best Delegate’ award within her committee, marking a historic first for LUMS as the institution’s freshman to attain such recognition at HNMUN.

This victory not only stands as a momentous accomplishment for LUMS and Pakistan but also Asia at large, as the first non-American or European team to achieve this feat. Having made history last year as the inaugural Pakistani delegation to triumph, their consecutive victory this year further solidifies their legacy as the inaugural Asian team to achieve such a feat.

Congrats to this talented lot for making a historic win for LUMS and Pakistan. A special congratulations to Sabeen Hamood for showing us that is doesn’t matter how old you are or what grade you’re in, if you’re in it for the long haul, it can be yours.

Female LUMS Employee Allegedly Killed for Refusing Conversion

  • Shazia’s family expressed concerns about receiving justice, given their previous experience with the lack of justice in their brother-in-law’s murder case.

LUMS employee Shazia Bibi was reported missing on June 6 in Lahore and later discovered deceased on the same day, according to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by her brother.

The news of the murder emerged on Saturday, July 1, after it gained attention on social media, despite the FIR being dated June 6. The Punjab police released a statement on Twitter confirming the arrest of a suspect.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the police tweeted, “The accused admitted to committing the crime. According to the confession, the deceased began blackmailing the accused.”

The police responded to a Twitter user who questioned the authorities and LUMS administration’s silence, stating, “Attributing religious motives to the murder is incorrect and completely contrary to the facts. Further investigation is ongoing, and the case will be handled according to the principles of justice and the law. The guilty will be punished.”

Bishop Marshall confirmed the apprehension of the primary suspect but called for justice for Shazia Bibi. He also alleged that she was killed because she refused to convert.

President Bishop Church of Pakistan, Bishop Azad Marshall, expressed his sympathy for Shazia Bibi’s children and family. He stated that she was abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered by four Muslim men on June 6 after repeatedly rejecting attempts to coerce her into converting and marrying the primary accused. He added that Shazia was the sole provider for her children after her husband’s alleged murder in 2021.

“While the primary suspect has been arrested and has confessed to this gruesome crime, there are efforts to pressure the family into reconciling with the murderers,” Marshall tweeted.

Marshall demanded justice for the victim’s family and called on the government to ensure their safety in the face of serious threats.

According to Zafar Masih, Shazia’s brother, she had been a LUMS employee for the past 18 months. On the evening of Tuesday, June 6, Shazia left for work as usual, with her shift scheduled from 5 pm to 11 pm. However, she never returned home that night, causing immediate concern for her family. Despite their tireless search and efforts to contact relatives and friends, they were unable to locate Shazia.

The following day, the worried family contacted the local police emergency hotline (115). Subsequently, they received a distressing call from the Hyer police station, informing them that a body matching Shazia’s description had been found. Zafar and other family members identified the body as Shazia Imran at the police station. The police revealed that she had been discovered in a plot located in Askari 11 DHA earlier that morning, around 8:30 am.

Family members disclosed that Shazia had experienced persistent harassment from the accused, identified as Mani, who continuously pressured her to convert to Islam and marry him against her will. Shazia confided in her sister-in-law about this, but she chose not to share it with her brothers due to her fear of escalating conflict between Mani and her brothers. The family believes that the murder of Shazia’s husband, Imran Masih, led her to silently endure the torment, hoping to shield her loved ones from further harm.

Zafar further revealed that Shazia’s husband tragically lost his life a year and a half ago under mysterious circumstances. The police had initially arrested him while he was returning home from his job at a gym. They later claimed his death was accidental, despite suspicions of foul play.

Zafar expressed doubts about receiving justice in his sister’s case, citing the lack of justice they had experienced in their brother-in-law’s murder. He voiced concerns that despite Mani’s pre-arrest bail being denied, he would eventually secure bail, depriving them of the justice they desperately sought.

Shazia leaves behind three children: two sons, Salman (16) and Abrar (6), and a daughter, Aliza (7). The traumatized children have sought refuge with their uncle, Zafar. Salman has taken on the responsibility of providing for the family by working at a local gym, attempting to fill the void left by his late father. However, financial constraints have prevented the younger children from pursuing their education.

LUMS Faculty Member Calls Out Institute for Promoting Controversial Activities

Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has once again come under fire after a faculty member called out the institute for promoting ‘LGBTQ’ activities on campus.

Reportedly, Muhammad Tariq from the Department of Life Sciences at Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering at LUMS via email to LUMS Vice Chancellor Dr Arshad Ahmad called out the deteriorating atmosphere at LUMS.

The institute has been facing heavy criticism for promoting ‘unIslamic“ events such as ‘Queer, LGBT and Why Period Art Matters’, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Tariq expressed his concerns about the events of Queer, LGBT, and Why Period Art Matters at Saida Waheed Gender Initiative’s ‘Calendar of Events for Spring 2023’. While acknowledging their importance, he questioned LUMS values, decency, modesty, honesty, sincerity, and integrity as a role model in the community.

Moreover, Tariq stressed that as a devoted member of the institute for the past 14 years, he felt highly responsible to speak out about these issues, which have also been raised by fellow peers.

“My intention is not to offend anyone, but rather to contribute to a positive atmosphere at LUMS where these issues can be addressed.” In the email, he added: “We are a Muslim nation and we are supposed to be role models for others.”

Tariq concluded that in the name of liberalism, the LUMS institute has been involved in aiding an atmosphere that is eradicating moral principles from society, which is quite dangerous.

He concluded by saying that it is high time the  ‘brothel-like environment’ that is emerging at LUMS under the guise of being a liberal institution is put to an end.

Not too long ago, the institute was called out on social media by users for promoting Bollywood culture instead of their own. The students of the educational institute had arranged a Bollywood theme event and shared clips of their costumes on TikTok and other platforms.

It did not take long for netizens to take it to social media to express their ‘disappointment’ and ‘anger’ at the students for promoting Bollywood culture in place of their own.

Social Media Reacts to LUMS’ ‘Bollywood Day’

One Twitter user wrote, “I am disappointed to see LUMS promoting Indian culture on Pakistani soil. As a Pakistani, I find this insulting and disrespectful to our nation and our culture.”

Another user tweeted, “Bollywood is not a part of our culture, and it is not acceptable for LUMS to promote it. Pakistani universities should be promoting our own culture and heritage.”

Although LUMS has not yet responded to the controversy, netizens want the renowned educational institute to apologize and prohibit any further events of such a nature. But, then there also others who believe that the day was in support of diversity and that be it Bollywood Day or any other day, it is a positive thing to promote different cultures from around the world.

Universities are a place where people from different backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities come together to learn and grow. Pakistani Students Assist Waiter at LUMS to Enroll into BS program at Szabist Islamabad

We all know how little kindness can change people’s lives, but we rarely come across people such as Ansar Ali, whose story will fill your heart. Ansar was a waiter at a restaurant in LUMS, who left his education at an early age to make ends meet after the sudden demise of his father.

The students discovered him during their project – Humans of LUMS. This is where they got a chance to sit down and talk to Ansar and learn about his struggles. Ansar left education after completing 9th grade, even when he took a keen interest in education.

The students asked him if he’s ever pondered upon the idea of going back to studies? To which he says that it’s too late for him now. He mentioned to the students that sometimes he gets to meet his classmates, who have completed their education, are currently employed, and have better jobs.

A Parting Gift By The Students

Fast-forward 2 years, a student at LUMS, Salaar Khan, now a president of the student body, decided with other students to send him back to school, a parting gift to the campus community. In a tweet, Salaar wrote: “Fast-forward two years. I was President of the student body & as our tenure drew to an end, we were mulling over a Parting Gift (a loose tradition where the graduating batch would sometimes give back to the campus community). We decided we were going to put Ansar back in school.”

Challenges

There were plenty of challenges on Ansar’s way to complete his bachelor’s degree from Szabist, including being out of school for too long, proper command in English, fees, finances back home, etc. The students together set a GOFUNDME for Ansar, which helped him immensely throughout his journey. The student body also collected money on campus.

He completed school at first, then college, and then later on enrolled into a University. He got enrolled in BS in Accounting and Finance at Szabist Islamabad and is all set to complete his degree after eight years of pushing his boundaries.

LUMS University to Become the First to Offer an Academic Program in Blockchain & Cryptocurrencies

Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) will begin to offer an academic program in the Cryptocurrency domain. The university has secured Rs 670 Million ($4.1 million) for the purpose granted by Hiro, formerly known as Blockstack PBC. Thus, the university will design academic programs for Distributed Ledger Technology (DLG), Blockchain, and Cryptocurrencies with the grant. The university has a rich history of being a pioneer in technology and research.

The cryptocurrency program has garnered the most attention from students and industry leaders due to its recent developments. Other than the program, LUMS also wants to support the Crypto Regulations in Pakistan. Dr. Farhat Haq, Provost LUMS, says,

“Building and offering programs in this field further our vision of being a progressive, 21st-century university. This timely and generous gift will enable us to make a contribution to the emerging field of blockchain technology. This is definitely an exciting new phase that will further boost the pioneering work of our Computer Science faculty and will play a pivotal role in the evolution of the University.”

In Pakistan, Waqar Zaka was the first celebrity to introduce a digital currency to the masses. For basic information, people often subscribe to Zaka’s live streams, however, now that the importance of technology is identified and picked up, so proper academic programs can be designed and students can formally learn in-depth about the latest technology.

Muneeb Ali, a LUMS alumnus, BS Computer Science 2003 and Founder of Stacks, added,

“LUMS has always been a hub of cutting-edge research and innovations and I am proud to have a long association with the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering. Crypto networks are likely the biggest tech revolution since the internet itself. This new collaboration on crypto not just strengthens my association with LUMS but can prepare the next generation of engineers and entrepreneurs to architect the next generation of the internet by leveraging the blockchain technology.”

Cryptocurrencies are on the rise for the past few years. Many didn’t truly understand the potential of the digital currency, but now that it has picked up the pace after CEO of Space X, Elon Musk, supported it, we see more and more investors approaching Bitcoin (a variant of cryptocurrency). Regardless of the uncertainty, cryptocurrencies have been predicted to change the world as we know it.
