Drama Serial Kuch Ankahi’s Take on Gender Roles is a Major Lesson

The drama serial ‘Kuch Ankahi’ has come up like a fresh breath of air for television fanatics who are tired of cliche storylines. With a subtle approach, the drama has broken gender-role stereotypes and people are relieved!

Pakistanis are head-over-heels in love with the story, characters, and how director Nadeem Baig has subtly addressed the issue of ‘gender roles’ in our society.

Starring Sajal Aly, Bilal Abbas Khan, and Mira Sethi alongside veterans Vaneeza Ahmed and Muhammad Ahmed, the show openly shows that men can contribute to household chores without there being a huge fuss over it.

Twitter user @kaafikhoobsurat took to social media to praise the show for a scene where Bilal’s character ‘Salman’ is washing the dishes. They wrote:

In the drama, the 3-sisters are more than enough for their parents, giving society a shut-up call. Moreover, the conversations in Kuch Ankahi between the parents and their children are very heart-warming and may even leave you teary-eyed.

Moving on, the drama yet again wins hearts by breaking stereotyping on age – after all, it’s just a number and we couldn’t have agreed more!

Samiya (Mira Sethi) is under the pressure of getting married by 28 because by then women are considered too old, white hair starts to show, and of course, these things can only lead to taunts by the MIL. But, Samiya quietly takes one thing at a time with her mother all for the sake of her happiness and her family’s peace.

What’s even more beautiful is that the domestic worker ‘Meena’, despite her religion not being up-right identified (hints are she is non-Muslim) is treated equally as if she was another member of the family, which shows the importance of treating everyone alike. Moreover, it sends a positive image that we care about minorities as much as we do about each other.

We hope that the drama serial continues to make waves on the TC screens and continues to receive the love it has been getting.

While we saw some of our favourite shows come to an end, the new year 2023 is ready to bring some new ones our way. This year we’ve got our eyes on a few interesting titles, casts, and storylines coming our way.

2. Hook

ARY Digital’s Hook is a love story of 2 university students living a simple life however, soon an influential family comes in the way turning everything into a huge family feud.

Ready to bring a social purpose to your households, Kuch Ankahi is all about family values, and women empowerment, and is a rom-com we are eagerly waiting for. It was been jotted by Mohammed Ahmed, directed by Nadeem Baig and co-produced by Kashf Foundation and Six Sigma Plus.

It has a powerful cast including the bubbly Sajal Aly opposite the handsome Bilal Abbas Khan, Mohammed Ahmed, Irsa Ghazal, Mira Sethi, Adnan Samad, Babar Ali, Vaneeza Ahmed and Qudsia Ali. It is on air and you can watch it on ARY Digital.

4. Pyari Mona


‘Sadly, women are being judged all the time for their appearance, particularly weight. They are subjected to unkind remarks like “Kitni moti ho gayee ho”.’ Shared actress Sanam Jung about her narrative for Pyari Mona.

The drama unfolds the story of a plus-size woman in Pakistan and the daily issues she has to face within her home and in society because of her weight and appearance.

Ready to break fat shaming and body stereotyping, Pyari Mona also stars Adeel Hussain, Mashal Khan, Sabeeka Imam and Mohammad Hunbal and is Directed by Ali Hassan and written by Haseeb Ahmed.

The drama is written by Adeel Razzak and directed by Ahmed Bhatti.

For the first time ever, Muneeb Butt will play the character of a trans officer and the show will portray the struggles these individuals have to go through in modern society.

Bilal Abbas Khan makes it to Eastern Eye’s “30 under 30 Global Asian Stars” List

One of Pakistan’s most celebrated young actors, Bilal Abbas Khan has been included in the Top 30 under 30 Global Asian Stars, published by UK based publication Eastern Eye this weekend, a list that also includes the likes of Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt, & singer Guru Randhawa.

The young heartthrob’s star has been making waves for his acting and dashing good looks, with 2020 being a particularly good year for him. Ek Jhooti Love Story, his 1st international web series was loved by fans and critics alike. Similarly, Pyar Ke Sadqay was one of the most popular dramas of the year on Pakistani TV.

“He may have only made his acting debut in 2016, but the Pakistani actor has had a rapid rise since then and starred in a massive number of marvellous projects. The 27-year-old has positioned himself perfectly as the future of film and TV in his country. With more big film and TV projects on the way, he is one to look out for.” Eastern Eye on Bilal Abbas Khan.

Speaking about the recognition the actor said, “This is a great honour and I feel humbled to be part of Eastern Eye’s prestigious list. Bilal Abbas Khan’s DUNK to Go On Air from 23rd December on ARY Digital

After his successful foray into the digital world with the hit web series ‘Ek Jhooti Love Story’ this year, Bilal Abbas Khan is once again headed to the small screen with drama serial ‘Dunk’, slated to go on-air from 23rd December, Wednesday, at 8 PM on ARY Digital.

This marks as his third project with director Badar Mehmood, who he has previously worked within the critically acclaimed dramas Cheekh and Balaa, earning Lux Style Awards nominations for both two years in a row. His new drama ‘Dunk’ is a murder mystery where Bilal Abbas would be seen in a lead role opposite Sana Javed for the first time. Starring as ‘Haider’, Bilal would be playing a realistic and honest role after his multiple eccentric and unique characters this year.

“Dunk is a very special story – one that will create a lot of noise, and one that needs to be told. My character is a very realistic one – Haider is an honest guy who stands with the truth and fights for what is right,” said Bilal Abbas Khan, talking about his role. “It was also great to reunite with my Cheekh and Balaa team – and it is always a pleasure working with Badar (Mehmood). I hope we manage to get the message we have tried to portray across successfully.”

Bilal Abbas Khan has had quite a year with multiple hit projects under his belt, proving to be one of the most bankable actors in the industry at the moment. Be it the innocent Abdullah in Pyar Ke Sadqay, or a typical Karachi boy in Ek Jhooti Love Story, the actor has created his place in the industry over time with his choices of unique roles. He has also been ranked amongst the top 50 Asian celebrities in the world this year.

‘Dunk’ has been penned by Mohsin Ali Shah and also features an ensemble cast including Shahood Alvi, Fahad Sheikh, Laila Wasti, Saifi Hassan, Salma Hassan, Kanwal Khan, Noman Ejaz, and Azekah Daniel among others.
