Shahzadi Rai and Chandni Shah have become the first ever transgender members to become members of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) City Council for one of the seats reserved for transgender persons.
Rai is a dedicated violence case manager at the Gender Interactive Alliance and has been campaigning as a political activist for years, striving to secure legislative rights for the khwajasira community in Pakistan. Likewise, Chandni Shah is a prominent JI-affiliated advocate for transgender rights and has been actively involved in championing the cause for Pakistan’s transgender community.

Shahzadi Rai was put forward for the transgender person’s quota in the municipal council by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

The good news comes as a ray of hope for the transgender community in Pakistan after the Federal Shariat Court did not rule in favour for the Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Act, 2018. The news of Shah and Rai’s election and oath-taking was met with celebrations by the transgender community.
