Preliminary reports indicate that a speeding Toyota Land Cruiser lost control, struck a motorcycle, and then veered onto the service road.
Two people died instantly, while four others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
Identity of the Accused
The woman involved in the accident, identified as Natasha Iqbal, a resident of Karachi’s KDA Scheme-I, has been placed in police custody on a one-day physical remand. Natasha is the wife of Danish Iqbal, a prominent businessman and chairman and CEO of Metro Power Group, which owns several independent power generation companies, as well as ventures in biofilm, glass, and property.
Professional Background of the Accused
According to the Metro Power Company website, Natasha Iqbal holds key positions as the Chief Executive of Metro Capital (Private) Limited and JSDN Electric Limited. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Metro Power Company Limited and its associated companies, including Swift Storage & Services (Private) Limited, Gul Ahmed Bio Films Limited, and others.
Legal Proceedings and Eyewitness Accounts
In the aftermath of the accident, a case was registered at Bahadurabad Police Station against Natasha. Eyewitnesses claimed that she was intoxicated at the time of the crash and attempted to flee but was apprehended by bystanders and handed over to the police. Allegations of Preferential Treatment
The police have charged Natasha under sections of the Pakistan Penal Code for culpable homicide and negligence. Despite these charges, there are allegations that Natasha, who spent the night at her home instead of in police custody, is receiving preferential treatment. Sources also suggest that she was planning to leave the country on Tuesday morning before being intercepted by the police.
Mental Health Defense and Court Proceedings
Natasha’s husband claimed that she had been undergoing treatment for mental stress and was not in a stable condition when the accident occurred. Her lawyer argued in court that she is a psychiatric patient and should not be held responsible for her actions due to her condition. However, questions have been raised about how someone with such a condition can hold multiple high-ranking positions in a major conglomerate like Metro Power.
Remand and Next Court Appearance
On Tuesday, a local court in Karachi placed Natasha on a one-day physical remand after the investigation officer requested a seven-day remand. The court has ordered that she be presented again on Wednesday with a detailed medical report. Natasha’s lawyer maintained that her mental state prevented her from appearing in court, and she remains in police custody pending further proceedings.
