A hijabi Indian Muslim student Muskan, also known as ‘Sherni’ on social media, chanted “Allah Hu Akbar’ (God is greatest) in front of Hindutva supporters in India’s Karnataka state after they heckled her.
The footage of Muskan that went viral on social media shows that she parked her scooter in the parking of her college in Mandya and walked towards her college building when the RSS mob surrounded her and tormented her for her hijab.
Muskan’s harassment drew the ire of thousands of Muslims around the globe who termed her courage as daunting. In India, media personalities, Bollywood celebrities, politicians, and scholars called Modi’s government for insinuating prejudice.
In an interview with NDTV, Muskan revealed she wore the burqa to school since she started coming to college. In class, however, she removes the burqa but wears the hijab. “Since I started studying (here), I’ve always worn the burqa and hijab. When I entered class, I removed the burqa… Principal has said nothing, outsiders started this”.

She has been lauded for standing up for her right to wear hijab by many, including Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who wrote in a tweet, “College is forcing us to choose between studies and the hijab.”
She added, “Refusing to let girls go to school in their hijabs is horrifying. Objectification of women persists – for wearing less or more. Indian leaders must stop the marginalization of Muslim women.
