Climate activist Greta Thunberg appeared on the first-ever cover of Vogue Scandinavia. In her cover story, Thunberg spoke about the fashion industry contributing to climate change at length. She has become the most recognizable activist globally by calling upon world leaders to stop the climate crisis over the last three years.
Thunberg is “a singular Scandinavian figure and force of change, [and] also embodies the love of nature, pursuit of sustainability and unabashed fearlessness that is at the core of our vision,” says the magazine’s editor-in-chief Martina Bonnier in her editor’s letter.
Greta called out fast fashion and ‘greenwashing’ by big brands while sharing the magazine cover in a series of tweets.
“The fashion industry is a huge contributor to the climate-and ecological emergency, not to mention its impact on the countless workers and communities who are being exploited around the world for some to enjoy fast fashion that many treat as disposables.”

It may seem as if the industry is taking responsibility with their campaigns portraying brands as “sustainable,” “ethical,” “green,” “climate neutral,” and “fair”. However, that is not the case. It is pure greenwash.
Many make it look as if the fashion industry is starting to take responsibility, spending fantasy amounts on campaigns portraying themselves as ”sustainable,” ethical,” green,” climate neutral,” or ”fair.” But let’s be clear: This is almost never anything but pure greenwash. You cannot mass produce fashion or consume ”sustainably” as the world is shaped today. That is one of the many reasons why we will need a system change.”

What is Greenwash?
Greenwash is a process of providing misleading information regarding a company’s product, primarily in terms of being environmentally friendly. It is considered an unsupported claim to mislead consumers into thinking that a brand’s products are produced ethically.
“If you are buying fast fashion, then you are contributing to that industry and encouraging them to expand and encouraging them to continue their harmful process,” she told Vogue.
At age 15, Thunberg protested outside the Swedish parliament demanded the government lower its carbon emissions. Since then, she has become the face of environmentalism.
