The latest mega serial to grace our tv screen is ‘Khaie’ starring Durefishan Saleem as the vengeful, ‘Zamda’ – the leading lady and protagonist of the show. Breaking through the monotonous saas bahu saga’s is Khaie, a thrilling narrative that follows the story of a deep rooted vengeance carried out by the female lead.
The drama is based on the age-old Pashtoon custom of ‘Khaie’ which is the ultimate form of rivalry between two families/clans. The rivalry ends with one family killing off the opponent’s entire male members to put an end to the family line. Zamda and her family had just returned after living decades abroad, however Durab Khan asked for Zamda’s hand in marriage for his son Chanar (Faisal Qureshi) to put an end to the rivalry.
Zamda was already getting married to Badal Khan and that is when Durab Khan and his sons came to Zamda’s wedding and killed off her father and brother, leaving herself and her mother behind. They then kidnapped her and forced her to marry Chanar Khan. Zamda saw this as the best opportunity and thus plotted her revenge henceforth.
Zamda Uses Her Innocence as her Weapon
“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” – the saying is perfectly apt for Khaie’s leading character, Zamda who is the victim in the story yet has become the protagonist of the show. In the midst of monstrous men such as Chanar Khan (Faisal Qureshi) and Durab Khan (Late Khalid Butt), Zamda is the pretty, young and innocent face that knows how to play the game right and has planned out her revenge plan to the T while she has everyone else fooled with her innocence.
Zamda’s Killer Manipulation Tactics Unveiled
The young boy Asfand, Chanar Khan’s son was the one who shot and killed Zamda’s brothers and then ultimately led to the death of her father too. Keeping this in mind Zamda continued to watch him like a hawk and pounced on him as soon as she saw the opportunity to do so at his birthday. His mother asked him to sit at home while his father and his men danced away and partook in aerial firing. He was enraged and was sulking away when Zamda asked him to go to the terrace and enjoy the celebratory aerial shooting happening in the garden and also fire some shots by himself too to celebrate his birthday. As soon as he got to the terrace one of the bullets hit him and he was killed on the spot by one of his father’s henchmen. Zamda did not flinch as she saw his dead body and chaos erupt.
The Loss of Empathy: Zamda & Her Ruthless Pursuit of Vengeance
Zamda’s next targets are Barlas and Apana – the love birds that she is pretending to help, kudos to the director who shows how Zamda visualises killing her next targets. She plans on getting them caught as Apana is engaged to her cousin Pamir while having an affair with Barlas. Zamda seems to have lost empathy as she does not feel she is doing anything wrong with Apana even when Apana had nothing to do with the death of her family. It seems like Apana is the collateral damage that Zamda is willing to sacrifice for the greater good.
An Oath to Eradicate the Durab Clan
Just after she accepted marriage with Channar Khan she asked to visit her family’s burial site. Channar Khan took her to the graves which were in her home, she then started digging a grave saying it is her own. However, her expressions changed when she hugged her mother and she said, “I’ve dug this grave for my enemies” – as the music changed, Zamda swore that she would kill of the entire Durab clan. This scene sent chills down our spine as viewers found out Zamda’s true intentions towards her enemies.
