Australian social activist Shaniera Akram has highlighted how Pakistanis frequently body shame others on her social media platform.
Shaniera often says what she has on her mind, often unfiltered. The wife of a celebrated ex-cricketer took her Instagram this time around and emphasized how Pakistanis are not sensitive around people who have put on weight or maybe lost some.
She asks in her first Instagram story, “How do you know when you have put on weight?” She replied below, “Don’t worry, someone will tell you! #Pakistan”
It is prevalent in Pakistan to comment on other people’s physical being without an ounce of guilt. It is done so shamelessly that it is easily recognized by people who settle here, such as Shaniera.
She then questioned in her next story, “How do you know when you have lost weight?” She responds, “Someone will also tell you. Followed by an exaggerated version of how big you were before you lost the weight! #Pakistan”
Our society doesn’t realize how toxic this behavior is and how it can damage someone’s self-confidence. Things need to change for the greater good, so it is appropriate that we call out those who are still invested in promoting this culture and spread awareness on our platforms, such as Shaniera.
The activist called out Pakistanis to stop celebrating for not appearing on the rape statistical list 2021 because there surely are rape cases that go unreported because of the lack of law and tools to record them. It was surprising that many Pakistanis believe that we are not on the list because there are fewer rape cases in the country.
