National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has taken a significant step to empower Pakistani women. The forum has permitted married women to choose either their father’s name or their husband’s name on their computerised national identity cards (CNIC).
The news was announced by Nadra’s official Twitter account. The tweet said, “In a major step taken by Chairman Nadra @ReplyTariq for women’s empowerment in the country,(married) females can now choose to mention the name of their husbands in their ComputerisedNational Identity Cards (CNIC) or may continue with their father’s name.”

Some people on social media have confused this with the woman’s surname present on the ID card. To clarify, women were always allowed to change their surname to their husband’s or continue with their father’s.
On public forums, men and women are engaged in conversation based on what the pros and cons may be of continuing with the father’s name on the ID card or change to husband’s, as the decision may restrict you, particularly, while creating legal documents or setting up your finances. It is recommended to speak to an expert.
Addressing the 14th Annual Rural Women Conference, which 500 women from 109 districts attended, Chairman of Nadra, Tariq Malik, said that the forum has successfully reduced the exiting registration gap between women and men from 14% to 10% in almost four months. To increase the registration of women, it has also set up an inclusive registration unit.
“The unit is reviewing all policies to enhance women registration, whether it is linked with awareness or outreach. Within few months, approximately 40 million households have validated their family members through dedicated service 8009,” he said.
He added that “The CNIC is just not a plastic card. It not only protects the rights of women but also empowers them to benefit from the government policies and steps.”

In the latest developments, NADRA’s new policy can help identify if a man is already committed to another woman before their current relationship. In Pakistan, by law and as religious guidance, a man can marry four women at a time. While the law permits to do so, it strictly suggests that other women must acknowledge it. Men must receive permission from previous wive or wives to remarry.
