Pakistani artist Shahid Rassam to display largest Holy Quran with script plated in gold at Dubai Expo 2020.
49-year-old Pakistani – Canadian artist Shahid Rassam from Karachi, who has been the principal of Arts Council Institute of Arts and Crafts since 2018, says that this is his “dream project” that he has been working on for the past 5 years with all his might.
He says that his copy is the largest version of the Holy Quran with the script crafted out of aluminum and plated in gold – for the first time in Islamic history in over 1,400 years.
His dream project has come to an end. He will be displaying the first of its kind project at the Dubai Expo 2020, scheduled to take place in Dubai in October. Originally the expo was to take place on 20 October 2020. However, due to the pandemic at hand, it had to be postponed. The new dates are 1 October 2021.
Rasam told a renowned publication at his home in Karachi that “Calligraphers have created great copies of the holy Quran but no one has casted the holy book in [aluminum in] the last fourteen centuries.”
Many versions of the Holy book are displayed across Muslim countries of the world. The biggest one that was awarded a Guinness World Records certificate for being the world’s largest Quran was a 4.9 X 6.6 feet copy from the Kul Sharif mosque in the Russian city of Kazan.
“The clay was plastered and eventually converted into fiber before being cast in aluminum, followed by the gold plating. I created my own design with acrylic colors … And the technique is also very important. I used Italian glazing technique to develop the design,” he said.
