The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) is converting physical ID cards to digital wallets. The project falls under the government’s Digital Pakistan vision and will be available later this year.
What are Digital Wallets?
A digital wallet or E-wallet is an electronic card which can be accessed on your smartphone and is used for transaction or identification purposes. Globally, digital wallets are being used for quite some time now.
1 – You Will Not Have to Visit the NADRA office
We have all experienced standing in long lines at NADRA offices, and most of the time returning back home or office due to longer lines. With the CNIC converting into digital wallets, most queries regarding the CNIC can be resolved without visiting NADRA.
2 – Pakistani Expats Will Not Have to Pay the Pakistani Embassy a Visit
Pakistanis who live abroad have to visit the Pakistani Embassy in their country/region they are living, incase they have any issues with their CNIC card but with the upcoming change, they will be able to resolve most problems online.
3 – App Available on iOS and Android
‘Pak Identity’ mobile app is the key building block of digital ID to facilitate applicants of national identity cards through an online portal. The app is now available on both iOS and Android, meaning anyone with a smartphone with these softwares can easily access it.
4 – Contactless Biometric
We are still living in the times of a pandemic, so introducing contactless biometric through the application is quiet beneficial. Nadra chief Tariq Malik said that “with the launch of the app, Pakistan has become the first country to implement contactless biometric acquisition and verification using smartphone cameras.”
5 – Capture Biometric Fingerprints, Facial Recognition, and Scan Documents Needed for Processing
Another benefit of this conversion is that it will give citizens access to features such as scan documents that are required for the processing of ID card, facial recognition, and biometric fingerprint that are also requirements when getting an ID card made. However, biometric fingerprint can only be used on phones that support fingerprints.
