36 public and private sector universities of Pakistan were featured in Times Higher Education Ranking 2021. The selection of these universities marks a meaningful development in the global standing of the nation’s universities.
As reported, “One university featured in the 201-300 rank band, two in the 301-400, five in the 401-600, nine in the 601-800, ten in the 801-1,000 and nine in the 1,001+ rank band.”
How are Universities Ranked Under The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings?
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings is the global performance index that evaluates universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These evaluations are carried out in 4 broad areas – research, stewardship, outreach and teaching.
The education minister, Shafqat Mahmood took the news to the micro-blogging site Twitter. He wrote in a tweet, “Pakistani universities make headlines in UK’s Times Higher Education ranking of worlds universities in 2022. For the first time, 7 Pakistani universities in top-800 (up from 2), 11 in the top-1000, and 21 in the top 1600.”

Last 3 years have seen greatest upward movement of Pakistani universities in global rankings. We still have ways to go, but the direction is right, the pace is good. Credit to PTI govt and the unis that made us proud

As per Global Rankings, some Pakistani universities on the list are:
1 – The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) featured in the 300 rank band
2 – The University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, and COMSATS University Islamabad featured in the 400 rank band
3 – The University of Lahore and NED University of Engineering and Technology were in the 401-600 rank band
4 – Fatima Jinnah Women University, Jinnah Sindh Medical University and the University of Sargodha were in the 601-800 rank band.
5 – The Iqra University, Dow University of Health Sciences and Quaid-e-Azam University were in the 801-1,000 rank band.
HEC wrote on its Facebook page that”Pakistani universities show strong growth in the areas of Business & Economics, Physical Sciences and Life Sciences, Computer Science. Likewise, the international co-authorship of research in 2021 is also very strong. For more details on these rankings, one may refer to the Times Higher Education website.”
Minister of Education and the Executive Director HEC Dr Shaista Sohail were specially mentioned for this milestone achieved. “This remarkable progress in the field of higher education would not have been made possible without proper policy and planning by the government of Pakistan and the unprecedented dedication and hard work of the HEC team currently led by the Minister of Education and the Executive Director HEC Dr Shaista Sohail. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has been taking remarkable steps for the empowerment of the higher education sector through investment in human resources, raising academic and research standards and developing the physical and technological infrastructure of the universities.”

The list comprises a total of 1,59,683 scientists, doctors, and engineers who come from around the globe. The recently released list represents the top 2 per cent of the most-cited scientists in numerous developments.
