A few days ago, a video of a couple present at the University of Lahore went viral. The girl bent down on her knee and proposed to the guy. She handed him a card and a rose to express her love. The guy, seemingly happy with the PDA, pulled her in for a hug in front of the crowd. We knew this would not sit well with the university authorities as rules and regulations at universities in Pakistan are often strict in terms of the interaction between men and women.
On social media, users applauded the girl for making the first move. Thousands of users left comments on the short video clip from the university. A statement was later issued by the registrar of the varsity that stated that a special disciplinary committee sat down to discuss the matter and also summoned the students to the meeting in which they didn’t appear. The committee then decided that the only way to deal with the matter is to expel the students and ban them from the campuses.
Authorities made the decision, but social media uproared on the matter. Local celebrities and even politicians thought the move was disgusting. It does not just display conservative thought processes but also hypocrisy at its best since the Universities never take notice of harassment cases but instantly expelled the duo for a little PDA.
Politician Sharmila Faruqi sided with the Youth and said this was powerful and expressive
Powerful! Expressive! Full of hope & love! More power to the youth! https://t.co/5X2HjkY6hQ

Even Chaudhry Fawad Hussain spoke on the matter. He said Islam allows women to express their preference when it comes to marriage

Pakistani musician Shehzad Roy also took it to the micro-blogging site and stated the hypocrisy of our society
Larki ko sar-e-aam dantnay marnay par koee mutawaja nahi hota, par pyaar say galay langana buhat bada jurm hai. pic.twitter.com/GduBytbNnO

According to Mira Sethi, this is a viral, toxic mess
Two Lahori students expelled because of a public marriage proposal and subsequent display of affection.
What a violent, toxic mess this is.
A State that surveils, censors and bans all things natural and joyous, not realising THIS is how you brutalize a society https://t.co/fLPclp2RB4

Expel students who bully and harass others first, says popular host Anoushey Ashraf
Expelling kids for wanting to get married and showing love? This doesn’t stop love. The dirt you see is in your heads. Expel students who bully and harrass others first. Focus on mental health!! Hate is a far bigger crime than loving last I checked! #UniversityOfLahore

A country where pedophiles are defended and protected in the name of child marriage and converting religion of little girls we are uncomfortable with two consenting adults expressing love for each other. We reduce our so called morals to a joke everyday. #UniversityOfLahore

Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari also commented on the matter. She said this was “Ridiculous.”

You can’t expel love, says Shaniera Akram
Apply all the rules you want but you can’t expel love! It’s in our hearts, it’s the best part about being young and it what makes life worth living! You learn more about love than you can ever learn at an institution ❤️

Yasir Hussain also commented on the unfair expulsion of the duo
