We often find ourselves stuck in between problematic conversations among family or friends that very casually comment on people and their appearances when matching two people. The discussion is usually based on their height, weight, skin colour, and the list goes on and on.
No matter how uncomfortable this particular conversation is, we don’t dare to utter a word and challenge norms in the society we live in. However, an influencer, Naiha J. Eiman, aka rebelliosbrownie, has often picked up this topic and spoken extensively about the struggles she has faced with people who follow unrealistic beauty standards and how often she has become a victim in these certain situations.
In a recent encounter, Naiha found some disturbing messages on her mothers WhatsApp with a Rishta aunty that pointed out how the girl’s complexion needs to be fair to meet the requirement. As soon as Naiha read these messages, she was full of rage and had to come on her platform and share with her audience how sickening this toxic culture is.
She wrote in her post:
I don’t even know where to begin. A random scroll through my mom’s WhatsApp turned into a fit of rage.. I came across this disturbing chat with one of the most problematic and common aunties of our society, the GORA COMPLEX aunty.
With every rishta requirement comes ‘larki ka rung gora hona chahea’.
Swipe left to read what this particular aunty had to say about the complexion requirement. 🙂I’m so sorry to every girl and every boy who has been a victim of such aunties. No matter how strong you are these aunties will take your self esteem and try to crush it within seconds by just one sentence, “larki gori hai ya kaali?”. F*#k personality, screw how the person is from the inside and just focus on how fair they are, how beautiful their exterior is, how slim and smart they are. This is 2021, get over yourself and your complexes. Develop, buy or rent a brain. You’re a part of the problem and the reason why our society will never change. Here’s to standing tall and proud fiercely being ourselves AND saving ourselves from such awful people. Thank you, next!
We agree! Looks have nothing to do with who is a perfect match for you. These decisions are based on far more complex ideas, lifestyle, belief system and so on. It’s a decision two adults should make based on what works for them and not Rishta aunties ready to strip people of their self-esteem and mental peace that they have worked so hard on to attain.
You can get inspired by Naiha’s style. The way she carries herself is so elegant – a perfect example of how you can look good without focusing on the colour of your skin
