Thailand has launched a five-year digital nomad visa, known as the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), which allows remote workers and freelancers to stay in the country for extended periods.
The visa is designed to attract digital nomads, remote workers, and those interested in learning traditional Thai boxing, Muay Thai, and Thai cuisine.
Who is Eligible for Thailand’s Digital Nomad Visa?
Applicants must be at least 20 years old and either self-employed or employed by a company based outside of Thailand. This visa is unique in that it welcomes not only freelancers and remote workers but also individuals engaged in cultural activities within Thailand, such as taking cooking classes or learning muay Thai (traditional Thai boxing).
Duration of the Visa
The digital nomad visa allows for a stay of up to five years in Thailand. However, you are required to exit and reenter the country every 180 days, with an additional cost of $270 (£212.20) each time you re-enter.
Minimum Income Requirement
Currently, the new digital nomad visa does not specify a minimum income. Previously, remote workers needed to demonstrate an annual income of $80,000 (£62,850) to stay long-term in Thailand. The new scheme, however, permits those with savings of 500,000 Thai baht ($13,600, £10,684) to apply.
Additional Requirements
Applicants must not work for a Thai company and must pay an application fee of 10,000 Thai baht, which is approximately $270 (£212.20).
Application Process
Depending on your nationality and location, you might be able to apply via the official e-visa website. Countries eligible for online applications include the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Australia, and most European nations. Applicants from countries not eligible for the online process will need to apply through their local Thai embassy.
