Tennis queen Sania Mirza has bid a teary farewell to Grand Slam tennis. Mirza was participating in the Australian Open mixed-doubles final playing alongside Rohan Bopanna — her first playing partner 22 years ago.

The 36-year-old is regarded as a major sports icon in India and has a large fan base in Pakistan as well. She burst into tears after feeling highly emotional during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Sania and 42-year-old Bopanna were unable to get over the line, losing 7-6 (7/2), 6-2 to Brazilian pair Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos.

During the event, Mirza expressed her feelings sharing that Rohan was her first partner at age 14 and is now her partner for her last hurrah, she added that she couldn’t have thought of a better person to end her tennis journey with.

“Rohan was my first-ever mixed-doubles partner at (aged) 14 and we won the nationals,” said Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam champion, three in doubles and three in mixed.

“It was a long time ago, 22 years ago, and I couldn’t think of a better person — he’s one of my best friends and best partners — to finish my career here and to play the final. There’s no better place for me, or person for me, to finish my Grand Slam career.”

“I never thought that I would be able to play in front of my child in a Grand Slam final, so it’s truly special to have my four-year-old and my parents here,” she added.

Sania Mirza’s Tennis Achievements

When it comes to tennis, Mirza is definitely an ace. She has accomplished many firsts for her homeland India and has received many awards for her outstanding and spell-binding performance.

She is the first woman from her country to reach the top rankings in doubles and the first female to win a WTA title, followed by reaching the Top 100 in singles and reaching the third round (or better) at a Grand Slam.

Mirza’s singles accomplishments include a career-high singles ranking of No. 27 in 2007; a sole singles title on home soil in Hyderabad in 2005; and a 4th-round showing at the US Open, also in 2005. She reached the 4-WTA singles finals in her career.

On the other hand, Sania Mirza has also won 3 women’s doubles Grand Slam titles and 3 further titles in mixed doubles as a part of her collection of 43 doubles titles in all. Mirza won 44 straight matches, the longest such winning streak since 1990.
