Visually Impaired Canadian Mountaineer Jill Wheatley Wishes to Return to Pakistan

Canadian mountain climber Jill Wheatley was recently in Pakistan enjoying 3 months of sightseeing, trekking, and conquering.

With just 30% of visibility, Wheatley and her group took on the challenge to 14 peaks, which are above 8000m (Vision 8000), and break the stigma associated with traumatic brain injury, vision loss, and eating disorders.

Moreover, she is the first Canadian female mountaineer to summit Dhaulagiri and Kanchenjunga; 1 of only 2 to summit 4 * 8000 in Nepal. Both K2 and Nanga Parbat were on her list for Pakistan.

Wheatley summited Dhaulagiri, Kangchenjunga, and Makalu this past spring, this particular order means she is getting through the hard ones first. Usually, the climbers who start with Nanga Parbat have to hurry to finish K2 and Broad Peak before unstable weather hits Karakoram in August.

Apart from the usual risks and hardships, climbers added the unpredictable Karakoram weather, no rescue helicopters, or such resources to their list of challenges.
“I am so grateful I made it last year! This season, the peak may be too crowded,” Wheatley said.

Jill Wheatley is not only a mountaineer but also a mountain runner, ice climber, and ski mountaineer. Her golden words of ‘challenging the mountains of my mind are so inspirational. Women like her have the power of ignition to enlighten generations.

She took it to Twitter to share her journey, with her last tweet in Pakistan being:

Nanga Parbat ~ thanks for the reminders of the way life doesn’t always go the way we anticipate. I walk away embracing the serendipity to be found in the chapter; the entire team is safe & I will return for an extended stay in #Pakistan where I feel so welcome.

Brithish Mountaineer Adriana Brownlee Scales 9th Highest Peak Nanga Parbat, Pakistan

The 22-year-old British Mountaineer Adriana Brownlee has successfully summited the world’s 9th highest peak – Nanga Parbat, Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Shehroze Kashif and Britain’s Adriana Brownlee aim to become the world’s youngest mountaineers to summit the 14 highest peaks.

While Brownlee has already scaled the peak, Kashif, who is two years younger than her, is expected to summit the peak by Monday.

Reportedly, the British mountaineer reached the mountain’s peak on Saturday afternoon, in her eighth summit of 8,000 metres or above a high mountain in the quest to scale all the highest peaks.

Both the young climbers have the vision to claim the title which currently belongs to Nepal’s Mingma David who set the record at the age of 30 years and 166 days, who has successfully summited all 8 thousanders.

Adriana Brownlee also has many successes associated with her name, including Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Annapurna 1, whereas Kashif has scaled Everest, K2, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Manaslu and the Broad Peak.

While Kashif plans to complete the remaining 5 summits by year-end, his plan may witness an unforeseen change due to the lack of support,  funds and sponsorship. Whereas Brownlee, who was accompanied by other foreigners including Gelje Sherpa during the summit of Nanga Parbat will move to the Broad Peak.

The other foreign climbers to summit Nanga Parbat on Saturday include Sanu Sherpa and Naoko Watanabe. Earlier, Norwegian Kristin Harila and Taiwan’s Grace Teseng, along with a team of five Nepali climbers had summited the mountain.

While we are super proud of this young woman we also wish Kashif the very best for your adventures and hope that he receives the help and support he deserves to claim the title which has always been his dream.
