Pregnancy is a beautiful time in a woman’s life, but there is no denying that childbirth is tough on a woman’s body. From 9 months of intense labor, weight gain, mood swings, giving birth to postpartum depression, childbirth changes a woman’s body drastically. Speaking of weight gain, women tend to gain up to 17 kgs during pregnancy. Once the child is born, the baby’s weight can take up to a year or more to subside.

In an interview with BBC Urdu, Pakistani actor and host Juggun Kazim and other women who have recently given birth shared their struggles with post-partum pregnancy and weight gain. They said the nasty comments that come their way were painful and made things worse for them to top it all.

In a deeply saddening revelation, Kazim told BBC, “People pass such nasty comments on the size of my chest. I know my chest is bigger now, and if I wasn’t breastfeeding my baby, I would’ve starved myself to get thinner… Even if I try a hardcore keto diet right now, ketones will be released in my milk, and I can’t feed the baby like that.”

Kazim then spoke openly about her postpartum depression. She said during that time, the comments on her body gave her even more anxiety. “I used to wish that the ground would open up, swallow me, and close up. Chapter close,” she said.

According to research conducted in Pakistan by the Pakistan medical association journal, postpartum depression exists in Asian countries more than in any other region. New moms complain that they are fat-shamed and taunted daily, resulting in losing their self-esteem.

The criticism truly devastated Kazim and took over her life, “I walk with a deliberate hunchback now so that nobody can notice my chest too much… I don’t want to feel this way, and no girl should have to feel this way!” The 41-year-old mother of three with a thriving YouTube channel then requested people to give her a break. “Please leave me alone; I’ve just birthed a child. My weight may decrease if it has to, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. Meri marzi (It’s my choice),” she said.
