Hunza Valley, a popular tourist spot, is located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. As summer holidays are here, many tourists make their way to the valley to unwind.
If you’re planning a trip to the northern areas of Pakistan, Hunza is a great destination. It is also known to be safe for women if you are planning to travel alone or in groups. The literacy rate in the valley is above 95% and the best time to visit is between April and October. However, it is recommended to avoid during June and August as the place is swamped with tourists.
If you are planning to visit Hunza, we have listed below 5 things down that you can do in the area:
1 – Visit Cafe De Hunza for the scrumptious apricot omelet and Walnut cake
Cafe De Hunza is one of the most famous spots in Hunza and a great place to have some snacks. The cafe was established in 1998 – 1999 by Mr. Shafqat Ali. The Walnut cake at Cafe de Hunza is one of the popular items on the menu. Our editor in chief, Farhat Kapadia Mehboob had the privilege to speak to Mr Shafqat just a few months before his untimely demise on her visit to the valley. He informed her that the original recipe for his famous walnut cake was actually Swiss. He however modified it and added it to the menu in 2002.
Other items on the menu include pancakes, coffee, brownies, sandwiches, dry fruits, honey, etc. Students from LUMS were his first clients, followed by NCA. Another interesting thing is that the cafe sells apricot kernel soap, pure apricot oil, and other skincare items made by women from the valley. Apparently, a Japanese woman who lived in the area for some time taught the women of the region the skills on how to make these products.
2 – Stay at Luxus Hunza, Lake Resort
Luxus Hunza resort is one of the most beautiful places to stay in Hunza in terms of the view. Nothing can beat it! It has become a tourist spot for international travelers and locals also enjoy staying over too. However, the room rates are quite high and may not suit everyone’s budget. The resort offers 3 kinds of rooms all with different facilities and charges. Most of the time, the resort is fully booked.
3 – Enjoy Rafting, Boating, and Jet Ski in Hunza
Several rivers in Hunza, including the Kunhar River, the Hunza River, and the Gilgit River are open for water rafting. Other water activities include jet skis and boating that can be done at Attabad lake. Please note that these activities are expensive, however, more expensive for international tourists.
4 – Khunjerab Pass – China Border
People also like to visit the China border when they visit Hunza. They drive from Passu to the Khunjerab Pass and enjoy the scenery along the road and you can even stop by and pick fresh apples from the gardens of people happy to invite you in for tea. You can also visit Khunjerab National Park which is quite beautiful.
If you’re an animal lover , you may be in for a treat if you’re lucky to spot a flock of ibex grazing far away on the mountains.
The Khunjerab Pass is located at a height of 15, 397 ft ( 4,693m ) near the China border in the Karakoram mountain range. It is the highest border crossing in the world and the highest point on the Karakoram valley. The air is much thinner here with less oxygen and the temperature drops quite low so it’s very cold. The view is impressive but one cannot stay here very long but long enough to get some amazing pictures near the snow-capped mountains.
5 – Cross Hussaini Suspension Bridge (at your own risk!)
Pakistan’s most dangerous bridge is the Hussaini suspension bridge that locals take daily as part of their journey to work. However, it’s quite a challenge to cross for tourists from cities and other countries. The view, they say, is mesmerizing while you cross the bridge due to the river flowing underneath the bridge.
