It’s great to hear that golf is becoming more popular in Pakistan!
Golf is a wonderful sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
It can be a great way to get exercise, spend time outdoors, and socialize with friends and family.
Recently, women have picked up the sport and shown professional interest, the year 2022 has been one of the most progressive years for women in golf.
Though women have been playing golf since the 60s, the trend of women in this male-dominated sport and others has shown that women are no less than men in any gentleman’s sport.
Things took a turn after PGF President, Lt Gen (Retd) Zaheer, at the behest of Dr Asma Afzal Shami, sanctioned the holding of an exclusive, annual Ladies’ Golf Championship at the National level.
On the other hand, in 2017, Gen Hilal established the ‘Committee for Development of Ladies Golf,’ with Dr Shami as its Chairperson and Zeenat Ayesha, Humaira Khalid and Amber Javed as its members.
Moreover, major golf clubs in the country have appointed Lady Golf Captains and have made them part of their Tournament Committees. These committees have been put in charge to set conditions that will help female golfers, such as charging them 50% of the tournament fees – as result, the number of applicants increased by 400% from 60 individuals to over 260.
The Pakistan Ladies Golf Team, comprising of the national ladies champion Humna Amjad and Parkha Ijaz, proudly represented the country in the Egyptian Ladies Amateur Open, Nefratiti Cup 2022 being held at El Gouna Golf Club Hurghada earlier in 2022.
Legendary Ghazala Ansari expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all the lady golfers who had come together to organize, conduct and participate in the 1st Ghazala Ansari Challenge Cup held recently in her honour saying she is very delighted with the rise of ladies’ golf in Pakistan – earlier in Feb 2022.
It must be highlighted that she is the only golfer holding two unique records simultaneously, i.e. being handicap 1 and winner of the National Championship 6 times.
Even 50 years later, although each of these records has recently been separately equal by different ladies, none of these records has been broken.
