Aqsa Ajmal, an industrial design graduate from the NUST School of Art, Design & Architecture (SADA), is the first Pakistani global finalist for the Lexus Design Award 2020. After securing a spot last year in January among six global finalists for the prestigious Lexus Design Award, she made it to the headlines. She has earned the honor due to her innovative sewing machine for the visually-impaired.
There were record-breaking 2042 entries that came in from 79 countries, out of which six powerful and functional designs were selected, of which Ajmal’s novel project ‘Pursewit’ made the cut. The projects were chosen on the grounds of their explanation of three key principles of the automobile brand: Anticipate, Innovate and Captivate, and also with importance on the design that leads to a better future.

What was the inspiration behind the design of the sewing machine?
In an interview with a local publishing site, Aqsa revealed that a neighbor and friend lost sight due to an accident. She said, “It was very difficult for her to come to terms with how she couldn’t pursue her studies anymore. Not to mention, special education and equipment such as braille in Pakistan are quite expensive.”
This is where Aqsa got her inspiration from. She added, “I wanted to make her feel valuable, and that inspired me to create a concept which would help generate employment opportunities for her and individuals like her.”
Congratulations to Aqsa on this remarkable achievement. We hope she achieves bigger things in life with her true potential. Have something to add? Let us know in the comment section below.
