Pakistan has recently appointed Ambassador Amna Baloch as its 33rd foreign secretary, marking a significant milestone as she becomes only the second woman in the nation’s history to assume this prestigious role within the Foreign Service.
This appointment was confirmed by the Foreign Office on Wednesday. Baloch steps into the position following the retirement of Ambassador Syrus Sajjad Qazi, who completed an illustrious 34-year career in the service.
The only other woman to have previously held the post of foreign secretary was Tehmina Janjua, who served from 2017 to 2019.
The Foreign Office praised Baloch’s extensive diplomatic experience, noting her contributions both within Pakistan and in the country’s diplomatic missions abroad. Over the years, Baloch has held several prominent roles, including serving as Pakistan’s Consul General in Chengdu, China, from 2014 to 2017, High Commissioner to Malaysia from 2019 to 2023, and more recently as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, and Luxembourg in 2023 and 2024.

Having joined the Pakistan Foreign Service in 1991, Baloch’s career spans decades of significant diplomatic engagement. Her academic background includes a master’s degree in history, which has undoubtedly enriched her understanding and approach to international relations.
Throughout her career, she has held several high-level assignments at Pakistan’s headquarters and foreign missions. Some of her notable roles include serving as Minister Counsellor in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office. She has also held the position of Additional Secretary in the Foreign Minister’s office.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Baloch is also a family-oriented individual. She is married and has two daughters, balancing her personal life alongside her demanding career in diplomacy.
