Begum Amjadi Bano was an extraordinary woman who played a significant role in the political and social life of British India.
She was the wife of Maulana Mohammad Ali Johar, a renowned Muslim leader, and political activist of the early twentieth century.
Despite the societal constraints and limitations imposed on women during that era, Begum Amjadi Bano fearlessly broke barriers and played an active role towards freedom from India.
She was a symbol of resilience and determination and an excellent inspiration for Muslim women, promoting political consciousness among them and encouraging their participation in politics.
Her legacy inspires and motivates women in Pakistan and beyond to strive for their rights and play an active role in society. Today, we’d like to pay homage to this trailblazer without whom 23rd March may not have been a historic date.

Here are 5 interesting and lesser-known facts about her:
- Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah had great admiration for Amjadi Bano Begum and appointed her as a member of the working committee of the Pakistan Muslim League. She was the only woman among 25 members of the committee.
- Begum Amjadi Bano was a pioneer in women’s political participation in British India. She was the first Muslim woman to break the barriers and join her husband and mother-in-law to support the Khilafat Movement in the first decade of the twentieth century.
- Amjadi Begum accompanied her husband during his tour to London to attend Round Table Conference in 1930. She was the only Muslim woman to attend the conference, which was a significant event in the Indian independence movement.
- Amjadi Begum formed a separate section of Muslim women to work under the All-India Muslim League during the annual session of the All-India Muslim League held in Lucknow in 1938. This was a significant step towards women’s participation in politics. She proved her abilities through hard work, promoting political consciousness amongst Muslim women, and bringing them under the League’s banner.
- Amjadi Bano Begum motivated many Muslim women of prominent families to participate in political activities. One such woman was Noor-us-Sabah Begum, who joined the Khilafat Movement with her husband’s support and changed her lifestyle inspired by the personality of Amjadi Begum.
The most mind-blowing fact about Begum is that she is the one who, while addressing the women’s central sub-committee at Islamia College, Lahore on 23rd March, first referred to the Resolution as ‘Pakistan Resolution’, a title that was later picked up and chanted by millions.
