Hania Aamir has become the talk of the town after a video of her speaking out loud over colourism went viral. The actress, in a video, spoke of how she was suggested to get a tan by a friend. Clearly, Aamir didn’t appreciate the suggestion and spoke about it in a clip while using an Instagram filter that made her face look snatched, symmetric, and all things beautiful.
She said, “One thing that has been bothering me for a while is colour shaming. Gori hai tou chitti hai, dark complexion hai tou gori kyun nai hojati?! I think it’s high time we start having these conversations because… till when will we get insecure about the way we look? We need to own ourselves; we need to own our skin tones.” She spoke further about not meeting the unrealistic beauty standards of our society as we are responsible for the next generations to come, “We don’t have to wear two tones dark foundation or two-tone light foundation that oh, these are our beauty standards. These are terrible beauty standards, and we don’t need to follow them because we have a responsibility for the next generations to come.”
Getting Called Out For Using Insta Filters
In the clip, fans noticed what the actress was saying contradicted her actions. The Ishqiya star suggested that people should not try to meet the unrealistic beauty standards of society, while at the same time, she herself was using an Instagram filter. Naturally, people called her out for hypocrisy.
We believe as a public figure, Hania should have been mindful of the message she was advocating, but how can we forget that all of us are growing with our experiences? How can we forget that public figures are humans too? Can we, for some time, stop scrutinizing everything and give people space to grow?
Both calling out culture and cancel culture are toxic.
Instead, we should practice mindful criticism in a healthy environment where we do not target the person; after all, we don’t have a personal vendetta against this person. We only question the idea at hand. We understand that body positivity and diversity are foreign concepts and will take time to run their course.
