International women’s day is celebrated globally every year on the 8th of March. It recognizes and honours the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of powerful women amongst us. This year’s theme set by International Women’s day is #ChoosetoChallenge.
Every woman is aware of the challenges she has to face in this world if she takes a step forward. If she chooses to challenge the norms, gender biases, and stereotypes to the best of her capability, it will lead to a positive change improving the world we live in today and tomorrow. On International women’s day, we celebrate such women and their efforts. So let’s choose to challenge because change will follow. The theme further signifies inequality in the world that we must also actively try to eradicate.

Pakistani Celebrities have spoken out and challenged the norms in some way or the other. Let’s have a look at who did what and how
1 – Hania Aamir
Pakistani actress Hania Aamir is a popular celebrity in the industry. She often voices her opinion on matters where women are undermined or are expected to look perfect, be perfect, and pretend there are no challenges in the world for them. Previously, the star posted her bare skin covered with acne to bring forward the truth behind getting makeup done every day.
A recent video of the star is making rounds on social media where she is talking about a friend suggesting her to get tan. Women’s appearance is important, but how can someone randomly comment on someone and call them pale? Doesn’t her work and her achievements ever come into consideration at such a young age?
2 – Syra Yousuf
Syra Yousuf’s skin texture is exactly how the skin looks in person without any filters, without any photoshop, just bare skin with makeup. We all know that we are pretending that skin with foundation needs to look a certain way; however, Syra has had it and no longer wishes to be part of the bandwagon.
We need to ask ourselves, would it be such a big issue if a male actors skin would look like that? Would social media make up such a big drama over a celebrity’s skin texture? It is high time we let women live, breath, and flourish.

3 – Bushra Ansari
Last year we saw a side of veteran actress Bushra Ansari that has not been seen before. The star revealed her divorce details after 36 years of marriage on a talk show. In our society, women of her age would rather be advised to hold on to the relation for the rest of their life as so many years have passed. However, the star decided to challenge the norms and go ahead and take a step for herself.
Women really need to come out of the restrictions and” norms ” society imposes on them. These restrictions are baseless and should be discarded so women as individuals can thrive and play different roles in our society when required.
4 – Rubya Chaudhry
Model Rubya Chaudhry also spoke about her divorce at length last year. The model talked about the conditioning that has resulted in women being dragged down and shamed century after century for being divorced.
She said, “I don’t expect that will change, but even just a dialogue started will hold value in the lives of those that are struggling with their own set of challenges, it may give courage to that one woman who’s misleading into believing that staying silent and tolerating abuse of any kind, that staying in a situation where there’s no growth, that no matter how much of herself she gives she’s to expect nothing in return is the noble path to take.”
All women should practice their rights and take decisions deemed necessary for their growth even when society doesn’t approve of them.
