Bella Hadid is one of the world’s top models, the 26-year-old has recently starred in her first-ever Louis Vuitton campaign in collaboration with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
Not only has Hadid been featured in her first LV campaign, but she has also gone topless for it.
She took to social media to express how ‘proud’ she was to be featured by the brand and how ‘inspired’ she was working with a renowned artist like Kusama.
The campaign shows Hadid and other models surrounded by splotches of colourful polka dots, blobs of paint, and 3D balls.
She wrote:
My first @louisvuitton campaign could not have been a better collaboration than @yayoikusama_ … not only am I the biggest fan, so intrigued with her story and life….but I connect with her deeply on healing mental struggles through artistic freedom and creation. I am so proud to do this campaign, and hope that one day I will be able to embrace Miss Kusama, and tell her how she important she is to not only me, but so many people struggling. Proud is the only word I have. Proud. Bella interspersed her modelling shots with a few quotes from Kusama, who has been frank about the way she leans on her art to cope with her mental health issues.
‘If it were not for art, I would have killed myself a long time ago,’ went one line by Kusama, who has lived in a Tokyo asylum by choice since 1977.
Another quote Bella cited from the artist declared: ‘Every time I have had a problem, I have confronted it with the axe of art.’
‘I have been struggling with mental illness and emptiness throughout my life. Now I want people to understand my glorious quest for the truth,’ went another.
‘Working on paintings is a process toward my artistic creation. It is a new spiritual theme of my whole philosophy for pursuing the truth. Each painting represents a process in all of my art,’ Kusama declared.
Who is Yayoi Kusama?

Kusama, sometimes called ‘the princess of polka dots,’ is a Japanese artist. She has gained international fame because of her famous polka dots and their representation of mental health awareness.
As a girl, Kusama often had hallucinations that would freak her out, so much so that she narrates that the dots started talking to her. This weird experience influenced most of her later work.
By adding all-over marks and dots to her paintings, drawings, objects and clothes she feels as if she is making them (and herself) melt into, and become part of, the bigger universe.
Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos. Polka dots are a way to infinity. When we obliterate nature and our bodies with polka dots, we become part of our environment’s unity. – Yayoi Kusama
