International Women’s Cricket Returns to the National Stadium in Karachi after Nearly 16 years

International women’s cricket returns to the national stadium in Karachi after nearly 16 years. There is no doubt that women’s cricket has maintained a standard and further elevated the game in the past few years.

International women’s cricket returning home to Karachi, Pakistan is a reflection of precisely that elevation. There is no doubt that in Pakistan, the boy’s cricket team holds more influence than women’s cricket, taking the example of the hype created around the T20 world cup.

On Monday, in National Stadium, Karachi, Pakistan’s women’s team played against West Indies in the first of the three One-day Internationals to prepare for the ICC Women’s World Cup.  Pakistan women’s team competed to win one of the three spots to secure a spot for the 2022 World Cup before heading out to Zimbabwe on Nov 16.  According to cricket analysts, the three One-day Internationals will serve as an opportunity for both sides to get the desired match practice.

A 12-member squad has been set for the first ODI. The team comprises Sidra Nawaz, Aliya Riaz, Anam Amin, Ayesha Zafar, Fatima Sana, Iram Javed, Kainat Imtiaz, Muneeba Ali, Nashra Sandhu, Omaima Sohail, Sadia Iqbal and Sidra Amin.

Captain Sidra commented on the series. She said playing in hometown would be a massive opportunity for her team.  She said, “We are very excited and looking forward to playing West Indies at the National Stadium. We have missed playing in front of our home crowd, and I am sure fans will be treated with quality action when the series begins tomorrow.”

“This is a huge moment for me to be leading the national side in Pakistan. For any cricketer, it is nothing less than a dream to captain your country, and I am very happy that I have gotten this opportunity.”

In a tweet, Pakistani lawyer and internet activist Nighat Dad said that it is our time as a nation to support our women’s cricket team equally as we support our boy’s team. “While boys are making us proud in #T20WorldCup International women’s cricket returns to the National Stadium in Karachi after nearly 16 years. Pakistan, it’s now your time to support your women’s cricket team equally as we support our boys #PakistanTeam.”

Twitter users also congratulated the girls in green shirts and wished them luck.
