A lady police officer, Amara Athar, a BS-19 police officer, has been appointed as the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) of Lahore by the Punjab government.
This marks a significant milestone, creating history in as she becomes the first woman to hold this key traffic control position in the provincial capital of Lahore. This decision reflects the Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar’s commitment to prioritizing female officers for field assignments, aiming to reshape the long-standing ‘male dominant’ tradition in policing.
Traffic policing has always been dominated with male police officers on duty and holding charge, this is the first time a woman has been given the reigns in Lahore.
Officer Amara Athar takes over from retired Captain. Mustansar Feroz, who served as the Lahore Chief Traffic Officer for the past year. Despite several male contenders, the IGP’s preference for a woman officer aligns with the commendable performance of another female officer, Ayesha Butt, who previously held the position of Gujranwala CTO.
Ms. Athar has a notable history of service, including a substantial period as the SP for Model Town, Lahore, according to the official. The departing CTO, Mr. Feroz, has been reassigned to the Punjab Safe City Authority (PSCA), where he is set to assume the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO), filling a long-vacant position.
Female Officers Breaking Barriers in the Police Force
Laudable achievements of several female police officers have played a pivotal role in reshaping the landscape of law enforcement in Lahore, leading to the appointment of the first woman Chief Traffic Officer (CTO).
The outstanding performance of Lahore Investigation SSP Dr. Anoosh Masood Chaudhry, who handled cases from May 9 successfully showcased her exemplary skills in evidence collection and challan submission. As Investigation SSP, she has resolved numerous high-profile cases, including those involving murder and robbery.
In addition to SSP Chaudhry, the contributions of other accomplished female officers have been recognized. Lahore Sadar Division SP Sidra Khan, Crime Record Office (CRO) SP Aqeela Naqvi, and Gulberg ASP Syeda Sheharbano have all made significant strides in their respective roles. ASP Sheharbano has also been awarded as ‘the most inspiring female police officer’ by the Inspector General (IG) of Police. She has also been nominated to participate in the World Summit Award-2024, scheduled to take place in Dubai in March of the coming year.
