A British human rights organization has awarded Oscar-winning Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for her documentaries.
The People’s Portfolio acknowledges Obaid-Chinoy for ‘inspiring leadership, great courage and compassion for fellow human beings” through her work.
Why is Obaid-Chinoy Being Awarded?
Obaid-Chinoy is being awarded this year due to her efforts of directorial nature in creating great movies about women’s rights in Pakistan. Previous winners of the prestigious award include the secretary of the Smithsonian Institutio, Nobel Peace Laureate, Dr Denis Mukwege and Lonnie G. Bunch III.
The founder said in the caption, “A note to my followers: I have some exciting news for you all. I want to invite you to a special virtual event that is close to my heart.”
He added, “I am proud to say this year’s award is going to Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy [ sharmeenobaidchinoy ], the two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker from Pakistan, who directs extraordinary movies about women’s rights in her country.”
The foundation hosts a fundraiser to help with their future work and projects every year. This event also aids to bring human rights defenders under the limelight by being awarded for showcasing their extraordinary leadership.
On December 8th, The People’s Portfolio is holding its annual fundraiser at 6 pm, where Obaid-Chinoy will be celebrated, and her achievements will be highlighted. It is also aimed to generate donations to lift the voices of human rights leaders around the world and give them the resources and tools to amplify their important stories in 2021and beyond.

Two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has come forward to help other women filmmakers and storytellers in Pakistan. She has launched a platform called ‘Patakha Pictures’ that will provide grants and at the same time mentor women filmmakers—understanding the problem at hand that in Pakistan, it is difficult to find sponsors for small films.
