A young girl from Lahore, Aniza Khan, has devoted her life to rescue animals over the past 10 years. Until now, she has recused around 1,500 plus animals in total. It was her parents who inspired her to save the lives of helpless animals. Khan owns about 35 cats and 16 dogs at her residence.
Donations for Aniza Khan’s Welfare Project
Khan has put together a Facebook page where she appeals to people worldwide to donate for the well-being of the animals she rescues. While the donations from Facebook come rarely, most of the finances are taken care of by Aniza herself or her family and friends.
In an interview, Khan tells a local media outlet how all animals are different and can’t be put together, “Each animal has its own lifestyle and psyche, making each one of them different with individual needs. We cannot keep all animals together. We have to keep them separately. It not only is good for their environment but also helps in case of any viral spread of disease.”
Animal Shelter Set up by Aniza Khan
Khan’s tribe of rescued animals has grown ever since she first started rescuing animals. Her own residence didn’t have enough space to shelter these animals, so Khan bought land to set up a home for the animals she has saved. Besides rescuing animals, Khan also feeds stray animals such as cats and dogs seen in streets in abundance.
She continues sharing her efforts, says, “Every day I wake up at 7:30 a.m. and go out to attain food and feed the strays. I have designated spots for strays and feed approximately 30 strays daily.”
In Pakistan, animal rescuing culture has rather declined. Instead, we witness dogs being shot or poisoned and heartlessly buried in open lands outside the city by the authorities.
Aniza says people do not even contact her; they leave animals on her porch or doorstep to be taken care of by her. “Most of the days, I wake up to another kitten being thrown on my porch. I have both cats and dogs, and it is always hard to protect the new addition. People do not contact and leave them by my doorstep.”
Animals must be treated with respect. The constitution of Pakistan protects the rights of animals
“If you are looking for love, you will find it from a stray kitten with broken legs. You do not need to have an expensive breed to show or get love; we need to understand that animals are living creatures just like us humans, having needs and hearts just like us. We need to take care of them because they can’t voice their own needs.”
