- Priced under Rs 2,000, this affordable alternative to conventional nebulisers aims to make respiratory treatment accessible to more people, particularly children and the elderly with asthma or chest infections.
Final-year students from the University of Karachi’s Pharmacy Department have unveiled an innovative, compact rechargeable nebuliser, touted as the smallest of its kind globally.
This device is designed to offer convenient respiratory therapy for individuals with breathing difficulties, allowing for easy, on-the-go treatment.
Measuring less than an inch in width, the nebuliser can operate for up to 35 minutes on a single charge and maintains its battery life for up to two days before needing a recharge.
The students highlighted that the device is constructed from eco-friendly bioplastics, making it suitable for use in offices and during travel.
The nebuliser features both micro-USB and USB-C ports for charging, making it versatile and completely wireless. It is also soundproof, providing a quiet and discreet experience for users who need portable respiratory assistance.
Abdul Rahman, the group leader, pointed out that traditional nebulisers available in the market tend to be large, noisy, and cost between Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000. In contrast, their device is priced at under Rs 2,000, offering a budget-friendly alternative.
The team aims to enhance access to respiratory care, especially for children and the elderly suffering from asthma or respiratory infections, through their cost-effective and environmentally conscious invention. The project was developed by a team including Abdul Rahman Siddiqui, Taha Ishaq, Syed Waliuddin, Syeda Arshiya, Zohaib Salman, Maham Zaidi, Priyan Khan, and Tuba Saleem, who are committed to addressing critical healthcare needs in Pakistan.
