Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has proposed to set a quota for transpersons who wish to get admitted to the university for their higher education.
Transpersons in Pakistan are actively fighting for their basic rights. These include education, safety, job security, acceptance in society, and access to healthcare.
The source of the news is a user (@khanooshafk) from Twitter who announced in a tweet on the 15th of May 2022 that the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) is in the works to implement a proposal that seeks to set a quota for transpersons who would like to get admitted to the business school to accelerate further their knowledge and career just like other genders; men and women.
Anoosh Khan tweeted, “I think one of our finest proposals that is so close to getting implemented is having a transgender quota in LUMS admissions. This is something that is so important, and given the history of this issue, it is time that we proceed with it. Hope that the next council gets it done.”

Another user on Twitter said that her friends, supposedly university students, have reached out to the admin regarding it. As per the user, the “admin was a bit unyielding and uncompromising when it comes to this matter. I hope this proposal gets implemented soon!!”

While the step is a milestone for the transgender community, the change needs to come from the very bottom. “…this understanding has to be developed at the KG level! Are we prepared for it?”
But this understanding has to b developed at KG level! Are we prepared for it?

Dr Mehrub Moiz Awan asked whether the university would let go of the fee as the trans persons can’t afford LUMS.
For example, she said, “Greenwich University in Karachi recently started a free education for transgender person mandate, and three of our sisters are studying there now.”
Will they let go of the fees? No trans person can afford LUMS.
