A decade ago, people openly mocked transgender individuals for their identity, their ways of earning, their behaviour, their existence – society didn’t accept them as one of us at large. The state didn’t recognize them so much that they weren’t even issued a national ID card.
Now, a decade later, when the trans community has finally started working in different fields towards creating a positive image for themselves, no one appreciates any mockery against this minority in our society – especially when a celebrity openly ridicules them for their looks on national TV.
In a recent interview, model and actor Iman Ali sat down with host Vasay Chaudhry to speak about her life and choices at length. The host and the model discussed her presence on social media, her husband, and so forth. While explaining to the host why she doesn’t upload a lot of pictures of herself on her Instagram, she shed light on the body image issues she often faces. She then said she thinks she looks like a ‘khusra.’
“People tell me I’m good-looking, but when I stand in front of the mirror, I feel everyone is lying,” she shared. “I can’t even take pictures of myself. Whatever angle I try, I think ‘aye haye, khusra‘. While explaining her struggle, the model and actor used questionable language.
Today, when the transgender community is working so hard to prove themselves as useful and productive citizens, Iman referring to herself as ugly as a khusra on national TV is insensitive, ugly, and, saying the least, ignorant. As a star, she holds great responsibility; she must choose her words mindfully.
Aisha Mughal, a Pakistani transgender rights activist and researcher, schooled Iman on Twitter. She said: The celebrities should act in a responsible way while giving interviews. @ImanAli0 if you think you are ugly, fine, BUT do not relate ugliness with Khusra or Transgender persons. We are a beautiful, strong, successful and productive citizen of Pakistan.
