In a landmark move toward digital governance, Pakistan has officially launched its first-ever dematerialized digital identity card—a revolutionary step that marks a new chapter in the country’s digital transformation journey. Spearheaded by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), the initiative was unveiled during the organization’s 25th anniversary celebrations in Islamabad, setting the stage for a new era of citizen-centric services and smart governance.

The groundbreaking launch introduces a fully digital ID card that will be integrated into the Pak ID mobile app, allowing citizens to carry their identity securely on their smartphones. No more worrying about misplacing physical cards—the future of identity is now stored in the palm of your hand.

A Leap Toward Digital Pakistan

The initiative is part of the World Bank-backed Digital Economy Project, with a pilot phase slated to begin on Pakistan’s Independence Day, August 14, 2025. This strategic move aims to modernize identity verification processes across various sectors, from government services and banking to e-commerce and travel.

Alongside the digital ID rollout, NADRA is also developing a secure digital verification system, designed to enable real-time authentication for services that require identity checks. Whether it’s accessing government portals, verifying documents, or conducting online transactions, the new system promises a future where identity management is frictionless and secure.

Celebrating 25 Years of NADRA

The launch event, held at NADRA headquarters, was nothing short of ceremonial grandeur. High-profile dignitaries graced the occasion, including Federal Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi and NADRA’s founding chairman, Major General (Retd.) Zahid Ehsan. In a tribute to NADRA’s remarkable journey over the past 25 years, the State Bank of Pakistan issued a commemorative coin, while Pakistan Post released a special postage stamp marking the agency’s contributions.

A documentary was also screened, showcasing NADRA’s impact—especially its efforts in expanding identity services to underserved and remote areas, and its vital role in supporting law enforcement and national security infrastructure.

A Call for Responsible Citizenship

In its continued effort to maintain an accurate and transparent national database, NADRA has also urged citizens to report and cancel identity cards of deceased relatives. This step is crucial for eliminating identity fraud and ensuring the integrity of national records.

As Pakistan steps confidently into a digital future, this initiative symbolizes more than just technological innovation—it reflects a vision of a smarter, more connected, and inclusive nation.
