Pie in the Sky’s lava cake is what the internet is talking about these days!
But a lot of people are getting FOMO because they haven’t been able to get their hands on it yet. So to those people, we say, how about we save you a trip?
As amazing as the Lava Cake is, you can recreate it with relative ease at home. How do we know this? Well, we did a little digging and have a recipe you can use that’s pretty close to the original. Some modifications were made though, so it’s easier to pull off than the original recipe plus it doesn’t require an oven. So let’s get started!
The Layers
Before getting into the actual process or ingredients, you should know that there are 4 layers to this cake. That’s how it gets the right texture, and why you get an explosion of flavour in your mouth.
The first layer is a moist chocolate cake, the second is chocolate ganache, the third is chocolate pudding and the fourth is chocolate chips or chopped bits of chocolate. Sounds mouth-watering already right?
The Ingredients
Starting with the first layer, we need to prepare the chocolate cake portion. For this you’ll need:
- 1 Large egg
- 1 cup of sugar
- ¼ cup of vegetable oil
- ½ cup of buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1 cup of maida
- 1/3 cup of cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- ½ teaspoon instant coffee
Now we move on to the second layer, which is chocolate ganache. This is much simpler and only requires two items: 1 cup of heavy cream and 1 cup of chocolate compound.
Then we come to the third layer, here we need chocolate pudding. So here’s the list of items we need:
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 and a half cups of milk
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 3 tablespoons of butter (added later, check below)
The fourth layer is simply the chopped-up chocolate bits (or chocolate chips if you prefer). Make sure to keep some extra cocoa powder aside for this layer.
The Process
Now that you’ve stocked up on everything you need, let’s move on to the heavy lifting. This is a very simple recipe so don’t worry if you’re a beginner or don’t bake often. We’ll go over the steps layer by layer for clarity.
Layer 1: Chocolate Moist Cake
In a mixing bowl, crack open your egg then add 1 cup of white sugar. After this comes your 1/4th cup of vegetable oil. Then pour your buttermilk and vanilla extract based on the measurements above.
Now grab your whisk and start mixing till everything is nicely combined. Then using a sift, add in the maida (or all-purpose flour), cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt and instant coffee. For the exact measurements, you can check the ingredients section.
Once they’ve been sifted finely, make sure to whisk them into the mixture till fully combined. The consistency should be thick and gooey if you’ve done it right. If it looks good, add half a cup of hot water and then whisk some more.
When you’re done, pour your mixture into any metal container so you can move to the next step. To recreate the decadence of the Pie in the Sky cake, you can use a circular tin for extra flair.
Now you take your tin and steam the cake for 30 minutes on low heat. While you wait, you can move to step two. Set it aside and let it cool when it’s done!
Layer 2: Chocolate Ganache
This step is very easy, just combine one cup of heavy cream with one cup of chocolate compound. And voila!
Layer 3: Chocolate Pudding
Almost done! The ingredients listed for this step are above, and all you have to do is mix them in a pot (except the butter). Keep mixing everything till it looks smooth. It should look melted and watery when you’re done.
Now put it on low heat and mix some more till the pudding thickens. Once it comes to a boil add 3 tablespoons of butter and keep mixing. Make sure you scrape at the sides so no chocolate gets left over.
Once the consistency looks nice and thick, you can switch off the heat and transfer the pudding to a bowl. Wrap this bowl with cling wrap and make sure the wrap touches the pudding. This way there won’t be any air trapped in the pudding. Refrigerate for at least four hours when done.
Layer 4: Chocolate Bits
And here we are! The final layer. There are two ways to go about it, the fun way or the easy way. The easy way is using chocolate chips since they’re already small bits of chocolate. But if you want to have some ASMR fun, then grab a chocolate bar and chop it up into little pieces with a sharp knife.
Either way, place the bowl in hot water so that the bowl warms up and the chocolate inside melts quickly. You’ll need to mix this as well to speed up the process.

Assembling Time!
With everything ready to go you need to put all the pieces together. So grab your chocolate moist cake and spread your ganache all over it, make sure it’s a nice thick coating so that the flavour doesn’t get overpowered. Then add your chocolate pudding, followed by the melted chocolate bits. Refrigerate for 10 minutes so the top layer hardens.
And finally, complete the aesthetic by grabbing your cocoa powder and sprinkling it on top of the cake. Now dig in!
