Baazyaft is a Pakistani social enterprise that provides the Pakistani transgender community a respectable earning platform instead of begging and prostitution.
The idea behind project Baazyaft – which means recycled and rebirth – was of women entrepreneurs who pitched it to DICE British Council and successfully received funding after getting the first position. At Baazyaft, transgender persons are trained and employed to create handicrafts from recycling textile waste.
As per the managing director of Baazyaft, Bushra Ali Khan, her idea was based on people, specifically marginalized communities: Transgender people and the planet. By using textile waste, which is burnt or landfill and is hazardous for health to recreate handicrafts. These are sold to earn profit and income for transgender people.
Currently, the initiative has collaborated with 2 institutions to run the project: Akhuwat and Step Institue.Â
1) Akhuwat: It is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2001 on the Islamic principle of Mawakhat or solidarity. It provides Baazyaft with transgender people, products, and space.
2) Step institute is based in Lahore, Pakistan. It aims to provide not merely training but to educate youth for a tolerant, dependable, creative and progressive society. They assist Baazyaft in training the transpersons for 12 days in stitching.
This is the first phase of the project. The second is the production phase. It is currently running at the fountain house, where they are provided space. Eight transgender people are currently on board who are extremely hard-working, young, energetic, and wish to earn their livelihood respectably, not by lending towards dancing, begging, or prostitution.
The managing director Bushra Ali Khan is short on funds and would be grateful if people could spread awareness and help the marginalized society of Pakistan stand on its own feet.
