Indian publishing site, Times of India, recently published news that said that Meesha Shafi is being conferred 3 years of jail time – which is a hoax clarified Shafi’s lawyer, Asad Jamal. UK-based publishing site, Dailymail also jumped on the bandwagon and reported that the pop star had been sentenced to jail. From there onwards, Indian sites started reporting false news. However, the Wall Street Journal specifically cleared in their story that “if convicted”, she might have to serve time in jail.
We know sometimes publishers do not back up their story with authentic sources; however, we believe this was irresponsible of the people in authority. This is firstly a high-profile case in Pakistan. Secondly, it demotivates women to call out men who harass them at the workplace and get away with it. Such false reporting leads to havoc in many people’s lives, so it is best to back up the news with proper sources.

Shafi obviously was disappointed when she found out that her being convicted is making rounds on social media. She took it to her Instagram to clear the air. She said, “Another day, another disinformation campaign. Speaking up is even harder than being harassed. This is why so many suffer in silence. Sending strength and solidarity to all those who speak up and risk their presence to make way for a better future for all.”

Meesha Shafi Could Face 3 Year Jail Time in Ali Zafar Defamation Case
Asad Jamal said in his tweet that “No such verdict has been passed by the trial court in the frivolous criminal defamation case instituted by Ali Zafar against several women.” In this statement, Jamal says, “We are confident that the prosecution’s case cannot succeed.”
This is with ref to the fake news claiming that my client Meesha Shafi has been sentenced to 3 yrs imprisonment.
