Their stellar performance not only showcases their excellence but also speaks to their dedication to nurturing a culture of debate and critical thinking among students. This success story features two standout students, Eshal Amin and Imaan Ahmed, both from the Karachi Grammar School, who secured victories with Best Delegate and Honorable Mention, respectively.
Eshal Amin, whose passion for Model United Nations ignited after witnessing her friends’ success, describes her experience with Team MJ as an incredible journey of learning. The group are more than just a debate team; it is a family where a shared passion for debate creates a thrilling sense of belonging.
Imaan Ahmed shares her metamorphic journey with Team MJ and mentions how she had initially joined as a summer hobby without prior knowledge of MUNs. It was through her coach Sir Murtaza Jafry’s unwavering dedication and distinct teaching approach that her perception underwent a significant evolution.
Twice a week, students dove into real-world problem-solving, collaborating to develop original answers and defending them against each other. Imaan, who initially confessed, “I detested it, to be perfectly honest,” experienced a shift in mindset under the guidance of coach Mustafa Jafry (MJ), and eagerly looked forward to each class from thereon.
Coach MJ’s encouragement and ability to deliver hard truths significantly impact his team’s performance and hone apt critical thinking skills. Imaan emphasizes the importance of a coach like MJ who pushes students to aim for the greatest achievements, linking high goals to personal development.
Preparations for large-scale conferences, like Yale Model United Nations, involved late-night classes and weekend sessions.
The conference days, both stressful and exciting, brought forth new challenges in each session. Imaan learned the value of being action-oriented, highlighting the importance of promptly addressing challenges—an approach applicable not only in MUNs but also in daily life.
When Eshal’s name adorned the Yale walls as the Best Delegate, she described the moment as surreal, expressing gratitude and honor for the prestigious award. This achievement propelled her to set higher goals, unafraid to tackle more challenging conferences, solidifying her passion for MUNs.
Imaan’s message to aspiring MUN participants is an invitation to embrace the journey’s ups and downs, recognizing that MUNs teach students to think beyond the basics. Her eagerness for future conferences and the continual pursuit of personal and academic growth resonates with the spirit of Team MJ.
Collectively, Imaan and Eshal’s testimonials paint a vivid picture of the transformative impact of Team MJ’s mentorship and coaching. As Team MJ continues to carve its mark on the MUNs landscape, their achievements at Yale MUN stand as an inspiration for aspiring debaters. This is not just in Pakistan but beyond. The journey with Team MJ transcends mere victories; it’s about instilling a mindset of continuous learning, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of greatness.
